Menopuase Diagnosis

How Is The Menopause Diagnosed?

It may seem like an obvious question, but not everybody actually knows how the menopause is diagnosed. After all, irregular periods could be due to a number of reasons and so you may not necessarily think that it is the onset of the menopause. So, just how is the menopause diagnosed?

Diagnosing the Menopause

Diagnosing the menopause is usually fairly easy for a doctor and they usually do it based on your symptoms and your age. You yourself will normally usually know if you are going through the menopause as you will notice hot flushes, irritability and irregular periods. Once you get to the age of 45 you can generally know if symptoms happen anytime after your 45th birthday, it is more than likely that it will be the menopause.

Another way in which you can test to see if you are going through the menopause is a specially designed urine test. That will show you if you have raised hormone levels and it will give you a good indication of whether you are suffering with the menopause or not.

However, generally you will know yourself if you are going through the change, but there is often some confusion due to the fact that symptoms can last a long time. For example, irregular periods can go on for years before you actually experience the menopause. This obviously can be a problem and you will not know when the menopause is going to set in. However, if your periods stop for months and you then develop hot flushes, you are definitely going through the menopause.

Basically the menopause is the last period you will ever have before all of your eggs are gone. Then, once your periods stop altogether and those hot flushes do in fact kick in, you will know that you have been through the menopause. Menopausal symptoms can last for years after the menopause so some women do get confused as to how long the menopause actually lasts. It does tend to vary from woman to woman so it is impossible to predict how long your menopausal symptoms will last.

Overall the menopause is usually easily diagnosed by a doctor and there are various tests available online and in your local chemist too. So, if you are unsure whether or not you are going through the menopause, take a test to give you that extra peace of mind.
